Bailey Ave. Fire (Buffalo, NY) 10/12/09 : BUFFALO, NY - At approximately 12:10am on October 12, 2009 the Buffalo Fire Department was dispatched to 1418 Bailey Avenue for a house on fire. First due companies reported heavy smoke and fire in the area. Once on scene, members found a vacant 2 ½ frame next to the Bailey Avenue Bridge with heavy fire in the rear on all 3 floors. A defensive attack was immediately commenced and companies worked through the night to put the blaze under control. The vacant house had an exposure on the D-side that was completely protected. Scajaquada St. Truck Fire (Buffalo, NY) 10/11/09 : BUFFALO, NY – At 12:09pm on October 11, 2009 Buffalo Engine 31 was dispatched on a still to check an odor of smoke in the area of Naval and Texas. Engine 31 arrived on scene reporting smoke but could not find the source. Soon after, Buffalo Fire Dispatch reported another call for a truck fire at the end of Scajaquada Street. Ladder 14 was added to the ticket and the companies found a fully involved abandoned sport utility in the brush at the end of the street.

Michigan Ave. Fire (Buffalo, NY) 10/10/09 : BUFFALO, NY – At approximately 8:50pm the Buffalo Fire Department was dispatched to 1111 Michigan Avenue for the report of a house fire. Engine 21 was first on scene reporting smoke showing and that they were stretching a line on a 1 story occupied residence. Kings Hwy. Fire (Shelton, CT) 10/17/09 : SHELTON, CT – At approximately 10:30am on October 17, 2009, the Shelton Fire Department was dispatched to 96 Kings Highway for a reported structure fire. First units on scene found a two story private dwelling with heavy fire showing from the B-side first floor extending up to the second and into the attic. It was reported that 3 people had been in the home at the time the fire started, but all, including their cat and dog, made it to safety before the fire took complete control of the attic. The City’s fire marshals are conducting an investigation into the cause of the blaze, but it does not look to be suspicious.

Fifth St. 2nd Alarm (Ansonia, CT) 10/2/09 : ANSONIA, CT – At approximately 6:52pm on October 2, 2009, the Ansonia Fire Department was dispatched to 16 Fifth Street for a working house fire with reports of people trapped. Ansonia police were first on scene reporting a working fire and removed a wheelchair-bound woman from the first floor. The fire had started in the rear, but quickly ran the length of the 1st floor, possibly due to an oxygen tank. When firefighters arrived on scene, they had fire showing from almost every window on the 1st floor, with rapid spread to the upper floors. They made an aggressive attack and knocked most of the fire down on the 1st floor but were given the order to evacuate as the fire spread to the 2nd floor and attic. Unfortunately, one resident perished in this fire.

Howard Ave. Fire (Bridgeport, CT) 9/22/09 : BRIDGEPORT, CT – On September 22, 2009 at 11:23am the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to 1223 Howard Avenue for a structure fire. Engine 4 was first on scene reporting heavy fire showing from the 2nd floor B-side windows of a 2 ½ story wood frame. Their were initial reports of squatters inside of the vacant house, but a rapid primary search proved negative on inhabitants. The fire had already started to extend to the attic and roof area but was quickly knocked down by an aggressive interior attack. In all, it took approximately 15 minutes to put the fire under control with no firefighter injuries. The fire is under investigation at this time. Clifton St. Fire (Ansonia, CT) 9/22/09 : ANSONIA, CT - Shortly before 11:00am on September 22, 2009, the Ansonia Fire Department was dispatched to 20 Clifton Street for a reported electrical fire. While companies were enroute to the fire, the dispatch was updated to a working structure fire. First companies on scene found heavy smoke showing from the attic of a 2 ½ story wood frame residence. All 5 occupants that were home at the time the fire started had made it out of the structure safely. The fire was reported by the City’s fire marshal to have been caused by an electrical short in the attic of the home.

Diosesan Blue Mass (Westport, CT) 9/13/09 : WESTPORT, CT – On September 13, 2009, the Diocese of Bridgeport held it’s annual Blue Mass commemorating the eighth anniversary of 9/11 and was celebrated by the Bishop of Bridgeport, Reverend William E. Lori. This mass honors law enforcement, fire, and emergency personnel who serve in the Diocese of Bridgeport. Every year one member is chosen from police, fire, and EMS to receive an award for outstanding service to their respective fields. This year awards were given to Lieutenant Paul Kochiss of the Bridgeport Fire Department, Officer Robert Somody of the Stamford Police Department, as well as E.M.T.s Alan and April Yoder (a husband and wife team) of the Westport Emergency Medical Services. This mass is co-sponsored by the Fairfield County Councils and Assemblies of the Knights of Columbus.

N. 6th St. Fire (Camden, NJ) 9/9/09 : CAMDEN, NJ - At approximately 7:20pm on September 9, 2009, the Camden Fire Department was dispatched to 806 N. 6th Street for a dwelling fire. Companies arrived on scene to find heavy fire showing from the A-side of a 2-story brick. East Main St. 2nd Alarm (Bridgeport, CT) 9/5/09 : BRIDGEPORT, CT – Shortly after 4am on September 5, 2009, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched with a full assignment to the corner of East Main and Spring Street for a reported house fire. Ladder 10 was first to arrive on scene reporting heavy smoke and fire from the rear of a large vacant 2 ½ wood frame structure. Shortly after, Battalion 2 arrived on scene updating the report to heavy fire from the rear of 2 large vacants with extension to another 1-story vacant structure in the rear of the original fire building. In all, members were now dealing with heavy fire in 3 vacant structures and the assignment escalated to a 2nd alarm. It took approximately an hour and a half to put the fire under control, resulting in 3 firefighter injuries. All 3 firefighters were treated at Bridgeport Hospital. One firefighter suffered minor injuries when a ceiling collapsed in one of the structures, one firefighter suffered from burns to the face and neck, and one firefighter suffered a knee injury. None of the injuries appeared to be serious. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Truck Company Operations Class (Shelton, CT) 8/23/09 : SHELTON, CT – On August 23, 2009, Fire-Rescue Education LLC held a Truck Company Operations class for members of Shelton’s Echo Hose Company #1. The morning started with a classroom PowerPoint presentation at Shelton Fire Headquarters, followed by hands-on training in an acquired structure at 20 Buddington Road in Shelton. The course covered topics such as ventilation, forcible entry, searching floors, VES, as well as laddering buildings. Police Dive Training (Shelton, CT) 8/18/09 : SHELTON, CT – On August 18, 2009, police divers from Shelton, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Milford, and Stratford converged on the Housatonic River in Shelton at the Sunnyside Boat Launch for a training exercise. The purpose of the drill, which was coordinated by Fairfield, was to train on using a helicopter to deploy divers rapidly to the scene of a major water emergency. The helicopter that was used was Fairfield’s police helicopter ‘Eagle One’. The divers were picked up by the helicopter in Stratford at Sikorsky Aircraft, and flown out to the dive site in Shelton where the divers jumped into the water from approximately 12 feet. They were then picked up by their respective marine units.

Forest Rd. 3rd Alarm (West Haven, CT) 8/16/09 : WEST HAVEN, CT – Shortly after 9:30am on August 16, 2009, members of the Allingtown Fire Department were dispatched to Budget Transmission at 236 Forest Road for a building fire. Firefighting operations on scene went to an external attack early on in the fire, and the blaze quickly escalated to a 3rd alarm due to rapidly increasing fire conditions, heavy fire load, and possible hazardous materials. Temps also rose to around 90 degrees as the sun beat down on the crews operating. Mutual aid from New Haven was dispatched to the scene as well as Milford’s Special Services Unit. It was reported that no one was injured at the fire.

Justice St. Fire (Stratford, CT) 8/8/09 : STRATFORD, CT – At approximately 8:15am on August 8, 2009, the Stratford Fire Department was dispatched to 35 Justice Street for a reported structure fire. Dispatch had received multiple calls and was reporting people trapped on the second floor of the house. It was reported that there were 12 people in the Stratford Housing Authority duplex at the time of the fire. Everybody was able to escape the blaze except for a mother and her 17-year-old son. First in units found heavy smoke and fire showing from the 2nd floor A and B sides of the home. A very aggressive search and interior attack were commenced and the victims were quickly found on the second floor, but unfortunately it was too late for the mother and son. The fire was reportedly started from ashes on a mattress.

Bridge St. Car Fire (Shelton, CT) 8/4/09 : SHELTON, CT - Shortly after 8:00am on August 4, 2009, the Shelton Fire Department was dispatched to Bridge Street for a vehicle fire. First in companies found a car with its engine compartment heavily involved in fire. The vehicle was fairly close to a commercial building, but the fire did not extend to the structure.

Walnut Tree Hill Rd. Fire (Shelton, CT) 7/23/09 : SHELTON, CT – At approximately 9:00am on July 23, 2009, the Shelton Fire Department was dispatched to 557 Walnut Tree Hill Road for a house fire. First in units found heavy fire showing from 1st floor B-side of a 1 ½ story wood frame. All of the residents had escaped the blaze before the fire department’s arrival. The fire was quickly knocked down due to an aggressive interior attack, but a second alarm was called for tanker trucks from Shelton’s Pine Rock Company #4 as well as Monroe.

Soundview Ave. Fire (Shelton, CT) 7/13/09 : SHELTON, CT – At approximately 3:00pm on July 14, 2009, the Shelton Fire Department was dispatched to 82 Soundview Avenue for a report of 3 structures on fire. First in units found only one building to be involved. The ranch style house had heavy fire in the garage area that had already burned through the roof in that area. Firefighters quickly entered what appeared to be an unoccupied residence and started to work on the fire. Mutual aid was received from the ARMS Light and Air Unit. Derby, Trumbull, and Monroe were also called in for station coverage.

Buckley Apartment Fire (Liverpool, NY) 7/13/09 : LIVERPOOL, NY – On July 13, 2009, the Liverpool Fire Department was dispatched to 1107 Buckley Road for a report of a stove fire at the Buckley Apartments. First in units found heavy fire showing from the first and second floor of a 2-story garden apartment building. The fire was knocked down after receiving mutual aid from several departments. There were no reported injuries.

This gallery is ONLY meant to show the city through the eyes of a fireman, highlighting the city’s fire load and potential dangers (vacant houses and buildings). These are photos of run-down neighborhoods and commercial areas. There are MANY sections of the city that have much to offer. The food and entertainment in the downtown area rivals that of any large city I have traveled to. While visiting Buffalo, we were lucky enough to be there for its annual ‘Taste of Buffalo’. The Taste of Buffalo is the largest two-day food festival in the United States. It began in 1984 and now attracts almost 450,000 patrons annually. It has been voted WNY's premier outdoor festival. Camper Fire (Buffalo, NY) 7/13/09 : BUFFALO, NY – Shortly after 7:00pm on July 13, 2009, the Buffalo Fire Department received multiple calls for a mobile home fire with a commercial building as an exposure. First in units found a camper over a pickup fully involved. The fire was quickly knocked down and there was no extension into the commercial building.

Newport Ave. Dumpster Fire (Shelton, CT) 7/4/09 : SHELTON, CT - At approximately 11:30pm on July 4, 2009, the Shelton Fire Department was dispatched to 53 Newport Avenue for a dumpster fire. Neighbors had called in a heavily involved dumpster with several explosions coming from inside. Members from Pine Rock Company #4 arrived shortly thereafter and extinguished the dumpster with no extension.

Kitten Rescue (Shelton, CT) 6/23/09 : SHELTON, CT – At approximately 11:00am on June 23, 2009, the Shelton Fire Department dispatched one company to the Plumb Memorial Library for a kitten rescue. A young kitten had apparently become trapped in a well alongside the building and needed a hand getting out. The members arrived shortly and quickly removed the kitten from its situation. Soon after the cat was freed, a young girl and her neighborhood friends gathered by the scene, and were thankful to be reunited with their cat ‘Whiskers’.

W McKinley Ave. Fire (Bridgeport, CT) 5/31/09 : BRIDGEPORT, CT – At approximately 5:30pm on May 31, 2009, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to 496 W. McKinley for a structure fire. First in companies found heavy fire showing from the first and second floors on the D-side of the 2 ½ story wood frame home. The fire also extended to a neighbor’s 1-story garage. It was reported that the family was home at the time of the fire but all, including their two dogs and two ferrets, made it out safely.

Myrtle St. Fire (Shelton, CT) 5/24/09 : SHELTON, CT – At 6:22pm on May 24, 2009, the Shelton Fire Department was dispatched to 201 Myrtle Street for smoke coming from the attic of a home. Fire Marshal James Tortora was first to arrive on scene reporting a working structure fire with smoke showing from the top floor. Engine 2 was the first engine on scene and stretched to the 3rd floor where they encountered heavy fire in the attic space and operated in very tight quarters. The fire was quickly knocked down in approximately 20 minutes and mutual aid companies from Derby were both released from the scene and from station coverage.

Fairfield County Hero Award (Bridgeport, CT) 5/20/09 : BRIDGEPORT, CT – On May 20, 2009, Bridgeport Hospital hosted its annual Fairfield County Hero Award Ceremony in the hospital’s Hollander Auditorium. Twenty one members of various emergency services were nominated for the award. According to Bridgeport Hospital’s website, the ceremony was “established in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. The award recognizes the heroic actions of area police officers, firefighters and ambulance personnel and their important partnership with hospital trauma and emergency caregivers in saving lives.” The award was given to Sgt. Thomas Wrigley, Corporal Roger Miller, Officer Len Rosati, and Officer Frank Sapione of the Stratford Police Department, and Firefighter Tricia Wetmore of the Stratford Fire Department for an incident which occurred on September 28, 2008. The swift actions of these individuals led to the full recovery of a 9-year-old boy who was found unconscious, unresponsive, and barely breathing after he had accidentally hanged himself. Other nominees haled from Rescue Company 5 of the Bridgeport Fire Department, Stratford Police Department, Shelton Police Department Dispatch, Fairfield Police Department, and the Fairfield Fire Department. Stratford, CT Fire 100th Anniv. Parade (4/25/09) : STRATFORD, CT – On April 25, 2009 the Stratford Fire Department hosted a fire service parade celebrating its 100 year anniversary. The day’s activities started at around 10:00am at Stratford Fire Headquarters where Governor M. Jodi Rell, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, Stratford Mayor James Miron, and Fire Chief James Cavanaugh all gave speeches before kicking off a parade of over 50 emergency vehicles from as far as Ramsey, New Jersey. The parade ran down Main Street from Fire Headquarters to the Avco Plant in Lordship.

Kossuth St. Fire (Bridgeport, CT) 4/8/09 : BRIDGEPORT, CT - At approximately 8:45pm April 8, 2009, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to Kossuth near Barnum for a vacant house fire. The fire appeared to have started on the first floor of the 3-story wood frame and soon took control of the entire structure. According to the Red Cross, three families that lived in one of exposures had to find emergency housing due to damage sustained from the fire as well as firefighting operations.

Milford Fabricating Factory Fire (Milford, CT) 3/31/09 : MILFORD, CT – On March 31, 2009, shortly after 9:00a.m., the Milford Fire Department was dispatched to 46 Erna Avenue for a fire at the Milford Fabricating Company. The fire had apparently started from sparks that ignited dust in a machine’s dust collector inside the 1-story commercial structure. The fire quickly spread throughout the structure due to its reaction with flammable gasses used in the plant for metal cutting processes. Several explosions were heard coming from inside the structure. Firefighting operations were further hindered due to water supply problems in the area. The blaze required mutual aid from several departments (West Shore, Orange, Stratford, and Bridgeport) and went to a 4th alarm before being put under control in approximately three hours. There were approximately 80 people working in the plant at the time of the fire but everybody escaped uninjured.

Soundview Ave. Fire (Bridgeport, CT) 3/31/09 : BRIDGEPORT, CT - Heavy fire from the second floor B-Side of a cape on Soundview Avenue shortly after 5:30pm on March 31, 2009.

Soundview Ave. Fire (Bridgeport, CT) 3/31/09

Smith Ridge Rd. Fire (Weston, CT) 3/24/09 : WESTON, CT – Early in the afternoon on March 24, 2009, the Weston Fire Department was dispatched to Smith Ridge Road for a structure fire. First in units found a fully involved house with major extension to the surrounding brush. Dry conditions, along with gusting winds caused the fire to spread dangerously close to many other homes in the area. Upon completion of firefighting operations later that day, several acres had burned, and mutual aid had been provided from many of the surrounding fire departments.

North State St. Fire (Ansonia, CT) 3/9/09 : ANSONIA, CT – At approximately 2:30pm on March 9, 2009, the Ansonia Fire Department responded to 154 North State Street for a fire in the attic of a 2 ½ story wood frame. It was reported that three people were in the house at the time of the fire, but all managed to escape without injury. Neighboring Derby was called in as RIT.

Seaview Ave. Fire (Bridgeport,CT) 3/4/09 : BRIDGEPORT, CT – Shortly before 1:00pm on March 4, 2009, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to 912-914 Seaview Avenue for a structure fire. First in companies found smoke and fire showing from the 3rd floor A-side of a 3-story wood. All occupants of the 3-family residence were either not home at the time of the blaze, or made it safely out of the structure. An aggressive interior attack kept the wind-driven fire from taking control of the cockloft.

Fairview Ave. Fire (Stratford, CT) 2/25/09 : STRATFORD, CT – At approximately 10:30 a.m. on February 25, 2009, the Stratford Fire Department was dispatched to 71 Fairview Aveune for a reported house fire. First in companies found heavy smoke showing from the first floor of a 2-story home. The fire was quickly found and extinguished in the basement. There were no reported injuries from this fire.

Bridgeport Ave. Car Fire (Shelton, CT) 2/7/09 : SHELTON, CT - Two car MVA resulting in one vehicle becoming fully involved on Bridgeport Ave near Todd Road.

Eaton St. Fire (Bridgeport, CT) 1/31/09 : BRIDGEPORT, CT – At 11:46pm on January 31, 2009, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at 93 Eaton Street. The first in engine reported heavy fire from the rear of a large 2 ½ story wood frame. After an aggressive interior attack, the companies had to be pulled from the structure due to heavy fire involvement in the attic. There were no reported injuries to the occupants or firefighters, and the two family pets safely escaped the blaze. Unfortunately, 5 people were left homeless. This fire is still under investigation.

Howard Ave. Fire (Ansonia, CT) 1/17/09 : ANSONIA, CT – Shortly before 3:00pm on January 17, 2009, the Ansonia Fire Department was dispatched to 141 Howard Avenue for a reported structure fire. First units on scene reported heavy fire showing from the first floor B/D corner of a 2 1/2 story wood frame. An aggressive interior attack was commenced but companies were pulled from the building when fire extended to the attic. One firefighter had to bail from a third story window onto a ground ladder and was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor burns. Weather hampered firefighting efforts due to freezing caused by temps only in the teens. All of the residents were out of the home when fire companies arrived, and firefighters rescued the resident’s cat and dog early in the fire.
